Tonight!

Hour 1: DUB-U (Tempa/Hotflush/Stones Throw)

Dub U’ aka ‘Selector Dub U’ is a San Jose, California based DJ that began in 1994, inspired by his love for dancing, as well as dance and experimental music. Within his first year of dj’ing he was opening for Detroit techno greats Claude Young and DBX (Dan Bell).

His initial inspiration came from listening to DJ Red Alert and Marley Marl mixing hip hop and soul on WBLX and Kiss FM in NYC in the early 80’s and hearing Planet Rock by Afrika Bambaataa and Tour De France by Kraftwerk. In addition, he was influenced by late 70’s and 80’s punk, dub and dancehall, reggae, funk, jazz, house, hardcore, jungle, techno, electro, ambient and d&b. In the early 90’s hearing DJs such as Master’s At Work, Todd Terry, Dj Pierre, Danny Tenaglia and Carl Craig propelled him to buy his first Technics and master the art of DJ’ing.

After years of playing in San Francisco, he started producing music, drawing on his training in drums/percussion and audio engineering. In the year 2000 he started hearing the first 2 step and UK garage music and fell in love with UK underground dance music which inspired him to blend past and present influences.

Recently Dub U has seen his collaboration with TRG released on Hotflush 2 Recordings and he remixed Baron Zen’s – “No More,” for Stones Throw Records with Tekbazer.

Tonight!

Hour 1: Babe Rainbow (Warp Records)

"Babe Rainbow is another magnificent sea-shell washed up on our shores, except when we put our ears to this shell we don’t hear the serenity of the sea, but the cavernous, bombastic sound of inverted dubstep cave recordings documented beneath an oppressive futuristic mega city that constantly rumbles above with the noise of titanic machines in the midst of a apocalyptic takedown."
//20 Jazz Funk Greats

"Vancouver's Cameron Reed -- aka Babe Rainbow -- creates haunted, murky, "inverted dubstep cave recordings" that evoke similar feelings of paranoia/anxiety as SALEM's darkest and most desolate work."
//Gorilla Vs. Bear

"Babe Rainbow has got curves in all the right places. That’s right, Cameron Reed aka Babe Rainbow is an instance of dubstep finding home in North America and sounding fantastic! Creating anxious cries of Chia pets wanting so badly to grow, Reed captures the stages of evolution in his pieces - from concept to result we hear the complexity of growth, whamp of yearning, and thud of arrival. What Reed has also successfully accomplished is not only bringing dubstep to North America, but North America to dubstep."
//The FMLY

"Babe Rainbow is Cameron Reed from Vancouver his deep haunted grooves are really addictive you are highly recommended to grab more from his stuff..."
// APC

Joining us in studio in support of hs Shaved EP which drops on Warp; February 8th, Babe Rainbow drops by for a conversation and a tune or three.

Hour 2: Kuma and Motomasa (AOB/TKG Music)

The bear and the motobeat. The Vancity AOB wrecking crew. An evening of whatever the hell we feel like that could go anywhere from 0-200 bpm. Or perhaps just dance mixes of various anthems form around the world. hmmm...hmm...

Tonight!

Hour 1: Ali B. (Fabric/Air Recordings, London)

A FABRICLIVE mainstay since the opening night, Ali was offered his residency immediately after playing at the venue's pre-launch press party. A vinyl-hunter long before he knew what DJing was, his music industry background included working at Acid Jazz Records and spells as Press Officer to the Plump DJs, Norman Jay and Gilles Peterson. Over the last decade he has held down residencies at the capital’s two most influential clubs. He spent his teens working at the Acid Jazz label and then as a DJ, made his mark as resident at the legendary Blue Note club. He now resides at Fabric where he has been from the day it opened. He also hosted a weekly radio show on Capital FM for five years, the UK’s biggest commercial radio station.

Ali B established Air Recordings as the recording arm of his infamous Air parties, which have been running since the mid nineties at venues across London, including The Blue Note, 333, Mass, Electrowerkz, Rhythm Factory and its current home, Cargo

Hour 2: Kuma and Motomasa (Art Of Beatz/TKG Music)

An evening's broadside to the head of conformity. Some big and beaty but not too brawny business. In other words, just a typical evening in with the Art Of Beatz lads.

Tonight!

Hour 1: Vincent Parker (Run Riot Records) LIVE.

Vincent Parker, the Vancouver based recording artist signed with Run
Riot Records, has been crafting his own brand of live psyched-out
power rhythms since 2003. Formerly the producer and beatmaker of the
famed underground booty tech punk band Artemis Jackson, Parker has
been hard at work tooling and tweaking his latest release, "Prism
Myst", out in 2010 on Run Riot Records. Using a streamlined live PA
setup consisting of just a PC laptop and double Kaoss pads, Parker
makes new, genre-shunning, laser-blistering, glitched mega grooves for
the 21st century. Make no mistake, Parker has an instantly
recognizable style, and his own manifesto for the future of electronic
music. He plans on sharing it with you.

Hour 1:GENE ERIC VS DERMATITIS (Sleizure Radio/CJSF)

TONIGHT WE UNLEASH THE BEASTS.

Our recipe is simple: Combine the elements of SLEAZE, LEISURE and SEIZURE and you have the makings of a truly unique radio program that focuses on the lesser followed, not so popular, or plain out forgotten subgenres of electronic music. While there seems to be an abundance of house, techno, and trance, we have been known to play Ghettotech, Freetekno, Hardcore, Breakcore, Oldschool “rave”, Dubstep, and whatever else that doesn’t flow from the main stream.

Vancouver hardcore legend Dermatitis joins us us for a rare appearance in studio alongside partner in bacon and rumored split personality Gene Eric for a clash of clashlike proportions. Serious business. Hardcore? You know the score now!!!

Tonight!

The Art Of Beatz Sixth Anniversary Throwdown

So look at that, we're six. A handful of hosts, some cake and one simple
idea,

These are the basics that we reflect on as we celebrate six years of the
Art Of Beatz.

We had a very simple plan when we started, to present radio by the people,
for the people, because of the people. To take the best in terms of DJ
culture and electronic music that Vancouver has to offer and to give it to
the world. To take the best that the world has to offer and to give it back
to Vancouver.

Every Thursday night for the last six years at CFRO, we have done exactly
that, dropping bombs from some of the world's finest and giving kids fresh
out of their bedrooms their first chance at rocking it. We have been
blessed by the open arms of a community that has been more than willing to
come play amazing live and DJ sets for us from 0 to 200 bpm.

We've never needed snappy catch phrases, although you will find us talking
about the light at the end of the musical tunnel, beats with a Zed and
asking people about cake pretty much every week. We've always felt that the
quality of our guests and the tunes we've played; be they house, techno,
ambient, jungle, dub or drone, have always stood up. Good shit doesn't need
a pretty bow if it's good shit.

We are indebted to the DJs and producers across all genres that have come
and joined us in studio, cut us exclusive mixes or allowed us to broadcast
their wonder live. It is a pleasure to be able to work with you and to show
the world just what Vancity reps with. We'd shout out all six years worth of
you but that's more pages than we've got. You're all up at
www.artofbeatz.org.

We are blessed to continue to have a home at 102.7 FM on your radio dial.
CFRO, Vancouver's Coop Radio has been a shelter and a welcoming presence,
providing a welcome alternative to the commercial airwaves.

Above all, we'd like to thank all of you that have ever tuned in,
downloaded a podcast, come out to one of our birthday parties or shown up
at a live broadcast. Without you we'd just be pumping the magic into the
ether. This show has always been and will always be for you. The ones in
the middle of the dance floor, the ones with the headphones on, the ones
with their heads in the bassbins and their eyes on the stars.

Tonight, Kuma and Motomasa are joined by some cake, possibly some beers and maybe some special guests to play whatever the hell they want.

Six years deep and you know we won't stop.

Tonight!

Hour 1: CALAMALKA (Lighta/Plug Research)

Beginning in the year 2000 Vancouver based producer/ musician Calamalka a.k.a. Michael Campitelli has been steadily releasing music and garnering praise in publications such as URB “calamalka is my chronic on this e.p.”, XLR8R ”we may have just stumbled upon the bastard child of Pole and Monolake” and most recently with his latest effort “Shredders Dub” has managed to earn a hearty 8. on the much lauded Pitchfork.com. Over the last five years Calamalka has worked with labels such as the Miami based Metatronix and Los Angeles’s Plug Research as well as scoring his first feature film soundtrack for “On The Corner” a Vancouver based indie hit directed by Nathaniel Geary and subsequently a winner of numerous awards locally and over seas that was also released as an official soundtrack cd with Transiberian records. Calamalka has performed live P.A. recently with.... Kode 9, Benga + Hatcha, Falty DL, Machine Drum, Pole, Deadbeat, The Bug, Megasoid, Eskmo, Filastine and RSD.

Calamalka is currently working on a new album of off kilter-minimal-funky-hip-hop that will be released in early 2010 and is currently an active member with music collectives Lighta! Sound and Brief Case Rockers.

http://www.myspace.com/calamalka

Hour 2: Kuma and Motomasa (TKG/AOB)

Kuma may play some boom bap in advance of his Friday gig at 917 Main with Phowa and the mighty Calamalka. He may also do a William Basinski megamix. We're never quite sure.

Motomasa will come deep, he'll likely come on the house tip. Then again, he may play the Stone roses again and make you dance like a 16 year old raver. We're never quite sure.

What we do know is that after six years, it's still fuckin' awesome.
